AllStar Weekend are a young, up and coming pop/rock band from California. They’ve recently got signed by Hollywood Records, have their hit song “Journey to the End of My Life” on Radio Disney and are set to take over the world! The guys recently took some time from their busy tour to answer a few questions for us, here’s what they had to say!
* Note: This interview was done in Sept. 2009 before the band’s name change from Allstar to Allstar Weekend*
Hey guys, thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us! Can each of you quickly introduce yourselves and your role in the band?
Hi
Zach Porter-vocals
Cameron Quiseng-bass
Nathan Darmody-guitar
Michael Martinez-drums
How did you guys meet?
All of us (except for Michael) went to school together. We grew up in Poway–a suburb of San Diego. We didn’t start playing together however, until our last year of high school.
What made you want to become a band?
Nathan and I (Zach) had been in garage bands together throughout high school. We played at pool parties and competed in our school’s battle of the bands. We weren’t very good. Nonetheless, we started writing a bunch of songs and then we brought Cameron and Michael into the picture and started AllStar.
Where did the idea for the name “AllStar” come from?
The name comes from one of the best songs ever written, “All Star” by Smashmouth. Haha.
Congratulations on getting signed to Hollywood Records, how did you guys react when you found out that they wanted to sign you?
We freaked out. When you work hard and get exactly what you want, nothing compares. It’s been a dream come true.
You guys currently have your song “Journey to the End of my Life” playing on Radio Disney and it’s getting a great response. Can you tell us a bit about the song?
“Journey” is one of our favorite songs. It’s cool because it’s fun and upbeat but at the same time it’s not another song about a girl.
Have you already started working on an album? If so, what can we expect, will it be similar in style to “Journey to the End of my Life”?
We’ve been writing everyday for the last week or so. We’re writing some more stuff like Journey but we’re not limiting ourself just to that style. Everything is a little different.
Is there anyone that you admire and would perhaps like to collaborate with one day?
The list is endless. The Jonas Brothers would be beyond awesome.
We see that you guys enjoy making Youtube videos, who came up with the idea for the hilarious “Stanky legg” video?
Haha. Well when we saw the real Stanky Legg video we knew we had to make our own version. It’s too amazing to pass up.
You guys have been touring quite a bit recently, what’s your favorite part of being on the road? What’s been your favorite city?
Our favorite part is probably just getting to see so many different things and meet so many different people. It’s awesome to get to see so much in such a short period of time. We really liked Boston and Chicago–but it was all great. I didn’t go to a place I didn’t like. And I almost forgot, we went to the Bahamas. That was epic.
Talking about being on the road, you guys were recently involved in an accident. Was it scary and how are you doing now?
The accident was pretty wild. It really shook up our world for a bit. We lost a lot of equipment but we came out almost unscratched. I think we all consider ourselves very lucky. We’re just glad it’s not stopping us from playing music.
Any last words for all your fans?
This is a very exciting time for us. It’s so great to experience our growth with supporters and fans that have been with us since the beginning and it is just as exciting to gain new experiences with new and excited fans. AllStar has allowed us to meet so many great people in such a short amount of time. It is truly amazing, thank you so much.
